Diary : Carp Fishing Premier 2005
Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th April 2005 - Ballasjön.
We dusted off our carp rods after the 6 months of winter storage and headed to Ballasjön in search of the first carp of 2005. We had been down to Balla during the week and prebaited our swims with a small amount boilies.
There were 5 of us in total on this trip and we arrived at Balla at about 19.00hrs on the Friday evening.
Myself, Jeanette & Roman had chosen to fish on the far side of the lake as i had caught 2 carp (and lost 3) in
that same swim the year before (April 2004). Niklas & Thomas fished the near side in the shallows.
By the time we had ferried all the kit over in Leif's boat, it was nearly 21.00hrs and beginning to get dark.We set up the rods and i chose Energy baits Scopex & Liver and Magic Fruit (dipped) for hookbait. Roman fished a homemade and a large trout pellet.
22.00hrs came and all the rods were out. We never fed anymore bait into the swim that evening due to the earlier prebaiting, an sat back and waited.
We never had to wait long, at 22.40hrs one of my Delkims sang that good old tune. It was the left hand rod that had been placed at the edge of the reeds.
I bent into the fish and 10 minutes later she was on the unhooking mat. This was an excellent start to the year as i wasn't expecting a carp after 40 minutes.
I had invested in some digital scales for this season so i could get a more accurate weight of the fish. It was time to try them out on the first carp of the year.
The carp was a Mirror Carp and weighed 6280g. It was taken on one of the Scopex & Liver 20mm pop ups with a D Rig tied to 25lbs Kryston snakebite gold.I re-baited the rod and cast it back to the same spot. I cracked open a celebratory can of beer and we sat around chatting about who would get the next "screamer".................
Well we found out at 00.50hrs when my right hand rod jumped into action and a bright blue delkim light lit up the night. Unfortunately this was short lived as the hook pulled after a 2 minute battle and i lost her!!
Nevertheless 2 runs in just over 2 hours had our hopes up for more carp being caught on this session. We sat up all night in anticipation of the next run, but it never came. Roman went to bed at 4am but myself & Jeanette sat up waiting for another run.
At about 5am I decided to get a pike rod out in hope of a little alternative action. I ledgered a dead Roach about 20 meters out in some open water and placed it on a Fox Micron PS.
At 06.55hrs the line pulled out of the clip, the indicator head dropped and the alarm screeched that horrible tone!
I watched the line peeling off the spool for a couple of seconds and then struck! The pike felt the hooks and then it went lunging off into the depths. It started to take more line from the spool and i knew this was not a little one. After a 10 minute fight she was in the net and i knew i had smashed my PB (3.5kg)!!I unhooked her and the scales went round to 5420g.
It was a very skinny pike with a big head and just happened to be the ugliest Pike i have ever seen. Nevertheless, Ugly fish count and i had a new PB Pike.
On Saturday evening we put out 3 marker floats and baited up the swims with particles. This may have been the kiss of death as neither of us had a touch for the rest of the session.
We woke up on Sunday to breakfast in bed, which was a welcome treat! Jeanette had made us a full English breakfast on a Single burner stove (how she did that I will never know)!!!! It was Sausage, Bacon, Egg, Pytt i panna, Baked Beans, Fried tomato and fried
bread! Most of mine ended up in my sleeping bag and down my shirt, but I
enjoyed it all the same. Then Sunday afternoon came and it was and it was time to pack up and "Åk hem".
There was only that one carp caught this weekend, but im sure there will be plenty more to come this year.
